Saturday evening, Sean and I got into the Mazda and drove into Omaha for a “Midnight Rendezvous”. We had done midnight showings before for movies, but never anything like this!!
We are “gamers” at our house. I’m not a fanatic, but I like playing. Sean, on the other hand IS a fanatic. He is up on all the games, and release dates for any game of any importance - either to him or to the system itself! So, when Nintendo started the whole fever-pitch for the “Revolution”, it started getting antsy at our house.
Last month, Nintendo finally had everything ready for the Wii (formerly known pre-production as “Revolution”). They announced the release date of 11/19/06. GameStop took reservations at each location. Because we have an “in” with several of the employees at one of the locations, we knew where to be and when. So, on an early morning back in October, I was waiting on the doorstop of GameStop at 8:00 a.m. I was the number 3 reservation (0ut of 12) for a system. I was the first one there, but two employees had been allowed to go ahead and put their names on the list for some reason….. go figure!! Anyway, this meant we were locked in for a Wii on release date - as long as that GameStop received three or more systems. They were expecting twelve all together.
So, back to Saturday night…. we headed into Omaha for the 12:01 release. We were let into GameStop at midnight and there was our Wii - along with the long awaited “Zelda” and a really kewl T-shirt that only reservations were getting! Ah, bliss. We got our system, ran to our car and locked the door (hey, you heard what happened to people with PS3, right?) - then we drove throught the Wal-Mart parking lot honking and flashing our Wii box to anyone who would look. Sean made phone calls (yes, at that late hour) to his die-hard gamer friends to do a jovial “in your face”….. no one seemed to mind the calls, and they were all happy/envious of Sean’s having gotten his.
By 1 a.m. Sunday morning, we were hooked up - and HOOKED!! OMG - what a fun gaming system. Even coordination challenged “old-farts” like me can play a multitude of fun games! I’m loving it so much that I may have to buy my own system - ‘cuz Sean is not so generous with his!!
All in all, if you like gaming - or have kids that like gaming - this is totally worth the investment.
